The United States retains an edge through its commercial space ecosystem, launch capacity, allied network, and integration of space services into joint operations. The edge is perishable: the PRC is rapidly expanding space-enabled targeting and counterspace options, while U.S. mission assurance and contested-operations readiness are still maturing.
Why this position
- The durable U.S. advantage is an ecosystem—not a small inventory of exquisite satellites: commercial launch, proliferated services, allied access, software, and joint integration can create many paths to the same mission effect.
- An adversary does not need to match every U.S. satellite. It can seek to break a mission thread by attacking links, ground stations, cyber infrastructure, user equipment, or a small number of indispensable services.
